Amaranthus spinosus Linn. (Amaranthaceae) is commonly known as spiny amaranth. It is a perennial herb, native to tropical America and found throughout India in roadsides, waste places and fields. Amaranthus spinosus have been used in indigenous medicine for the cure of diuretic, antidiabetic, antipyretic, anti-snake venom, anti-leprotic, anti-gonorrheal, anti-inflammatory, anthelmintic, anti-androgenic and as an immunomodulator. The antidiabetic activity of the methanolic extract of Amaranthus spinosus leaves were evaluated in alloxan induced diabetic rats. The histological sections of the pancreas were observed to know the effect of Amaranthus spinosus in diabetic and non-diabetic rats. It has been observed that methanolic extract of Amaranthus spinosus leaves exhibited antidiabetic activity. Methanolic extract of the leaves at dose 400 mg/kg has shown significant decrease of blood glucose level (BGL) at 4th and 7th day of the study period. The results suggested that the methanolic extract of the leaves of Amaranthus spinosus at dose 400 mg/kg possess potent antidiabetic activity. Thus, it can be concluded that Amaranthus spinosus leaves are having potent antidiabetic activity. Chemical constituents present in the extracts might be responsible for this activity.
